Microsoft announces Xbox Game Pass Core, replacing Xbox Live Gold – Times of India
After over two decades, Microsoft is retiring the iconic “Xbox Live” branding. A few years ago, Xbox Live was rebranded to the Xbox network, and now the Xbox Game Pass subscription offering is the primary focus.
Xbox Game Pass is currently available in three versions: Xbox Game Pass Console, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Now, Microsoft has announced Game Pass Core, replacing the Xbox Live Gold subscription on September 14.
The new tier, Game Pass Core, includes online console multiplayer and a collection of over 25 games for $9.99 (around Rs 820) monthly or $59.99 (around Rs 4,920) yearly on Xbox One, Series X, and S.
Xbox Live first launched on the original Xbox in 2002 and gained popularity through Halo 2’s online multiplayer format. The platform was later used by the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S. In July 2013, the Games with Gold promotion was introduced for Xbox 360, offering a few free games each month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
The Game Pass Core from Microsoft will include over 25 games to replace Games with Gold, and new titles will be added two to three times per year.
The following is a list of games that will be available in the Game Pass Core: Among Us, Descenders, Dishonored 2, DOOM Eternal, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Grounded, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo Wars 2, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Human Fall Flat, INSIDE, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Psychonauts 2, State of Decay 2, and Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.
What does it mean for Xbox Gold Live subscribers?
Xbox Live Gold members will automatically become Game Pass Core members. Games with Gold will end on September 1. Players can access previously redeemed Xbox One games with Game Pass Ultimate or Core. Previously redeemed Xbox 360 titles via Games with Gold will remain in a player’s library.
“Thank you to everyone who has been with us since the early days, joined along the way with friends, and now with us in Xbox Game Pass. I am proud and humbled by the stories we hear about online teammates becoming real-life friends after years playing, or even marriages whose initial spark was ignited in a pre-match lobby. We cannot wait to hear more from the community when it launches on September 14th, and we will see you online,” Jerret West, CVP, Gaming Marketing, said in a post on Xbox Wire.
