Microsoft Might Resort to Drastic Measures To Acquire Activision Blizzard

Microsoft is trying its best to acquire Activision Blizzard since 2022. However, it has come across many hurdles along the way. Recently, the CMA blocked the acquisition in the UK.

Microsoft will be appealing this decision in the court this July. However, it might resort to some drastic measures if this appeal does not go through.

According to a report by Bloomberg (via VGC), it was revealed that Microsoft president Brad Smith will be meeting the UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, in the upcoming days. Smith will be talking about AI and its regulations during his visit, and will also bring up the block on the Activision Blizzard acquisition to find a “constructive way to address regulatory concerns.”

Smith will be taking to Microsoft’s legal team to come up with the best way to counter the CMA’s decision in its upcoming appeal. However, if the CMA’s decision is not turned over, Microsoft might resort to pulling Activision Blizzard out of the United Kingdom, bringing it out of the CMA’s jurisdiction altogether.

What this means is that the deal can go through some other country in Europe, where the company gets the thumbs up from other regulators. Gamers in the UK will still be able to play Activision Blizzard titles through distributors, and the only people that will be impacted by this move are the Activision Blizzard employees based out of the UK.
