Microsoft to soon end support for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1: What it means for users, and all other questions answered – Times of India

Older versions of Windows operating systems — Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 — have reached the end of their lifecycle. Microsoft has already confirmed that starting January 10, it will stop supporting above mentioned versions of the Windows operating system.
The company has also mentioned the same on its official website. “Change can be difficult, but we’re here to help you take the next steps. After January 10, 2023, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 8.1.”
Here we’ve tried to answer all the questions you may have about Microsoft ending support for Windows 8/8.1. Read on:
What does ending support means?
Ending support simply means Microsoft will stop offering any new features, security and other service and updates to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems.
After January 10, 2023, computers running Windows 8.1 will still function, but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:
Technical support of any issue
Software updates
Security updates or fixes
Why it should matter to you
As mentioned, Microsoft will stop offering basic support like security and fixes to the operating system. This should be the biggest concern for you. Without continued software and security updates, your PC will be more vulnerable and this will increase the chances of getting hacked or attacked by viruses and malware.
Can you continue using the PC running Windows 8/8.1
Technically, yes. Microsoft has confirmed that the operating system will continue to function. It will just be deprived of any software updates and even Microsoft customer service will no longer be able to provide Windows 8.1 technical support.
What can you do if your PC runs Windows 8/8.1
Well, Microsoft recommends installing Windows 11, the latest version of Windows, on your system given it meets the basic requirements of the operating system. However, if you happen to own an older PC, that does not meet Windows 11’s requirements, you can still install Windows 10 operating system.
