Minions: The Rise of Gru Has a Different Ending in China Due to Censorship Changes
Minions: The Rise of Gru has a different cut.
No, we’re not talking about a cut to the extent of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which had footage for a four hour long film. However, the latest film about the bumbling yellow creatures has a different ending, which involves the nefarious Wild Knuckles and Gru.
For people unaware about the movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru ended with Gru, Wild Knuckles and the minions defeating the Vicious Six following a gruesome battle. Following their victory, Wild Knuckles is taken into custody along with the Vicious Six, with the former being taken to the hospital. However, it’s later shown that Wild Knuckles succumbs to his injuries.
During his funeral, Gru gives a heartfelt speech for Wild Knuckles. But, he is later overjoyed to find out that the supervillain had faked his death to avoid capture, with the two reuniting to drive off into the sunset in order to create more chaos through their villainy.
???????? censors have altered the ending of Minions: The Rise of Gru
In the original ending, Gru and Wild Knuckles ride off together after Wild Knuckles faked his own death to evade capture from authorities
In the #Chinese version it’s 20 year’s in Prison

This ending wildly differs from the cut that was showcased in China. Due to the country’s stringent censorship rules, the makers were forced to have a rather sad ending for Wild Knuckles, as audiences got still subtitled images, which showed Wild Knuckles being sentenced to prison for 20 years, while Gru returns to his family of daughters by becoming a good guy.
While changes to films releasing in China due to censorship reasons aren’t a new norm, many moviegoers claimed that the ending was edited quite poorly, as fans believed that the makers slapped a bunch of pictures together and added subtitles to satisfy censor board members.
