Mirabai Chanu pulls out of Tashkent World Championships | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Olympics silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has pulled out of the upcoming World Championships to be held in Uzbekistan’s Tashkent from December 7 to 17.
Mirabai, who had won the World title in 2017, decided to withdraw her entry from the event after failing to master a new technique in snatch category, for which she had started practising after reporting to NIS Patiala in late August. In her absence, former World Junior bronze medallist, Jhilli Dalabehera, will spearhead the country’s challenge in the 49kg category.
Earlier, the Manipuri weightlifter had planned to make her international comeback post her Tokyo success with the Commonwealth Championships in Singapore in October, but the event was cancelled over Covid-19 concerns.
The reigning CWG champion is assured of participation in the 2022 Birmingham edition of the Games owing to her current world No. 1 rank in her weight category (48kg) among the participating Commonwealth nations.
Mirabai has set her sights on winning gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games next year, a multi-sport event in which she has never competed. She had pulled out of the 2018 Jakarta Asiad after failing to recover from a lower back injury. Mirabai has been working on perfecting a new technique in snatch with chief national coach Vijay Sharma at NIS. She intends to lift the barbell above 210kg at the Asiad to stand a decent chance of a podium finish.
It’s been learnt that Mirabai might utilise the time between now and the Birmingham CWG to travel to St Louis in the US and continue her rehabilitation of shoulder injury with Dr. Aaron Horschig, a physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach.
