Mobile gaming in India set to be a $5 billion industry, claims report – Times of India

The smartphone boom in India has certainly given a massive shot in the arm to the gaming industry. Mobile gaming has become huge and a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Sequoia India predicts it to triple in the next few years. The report claims that while the Indian gaming industry is minuscule — only 1% — compared to the global gaming market, the mobile first phenomenon could help it triple the revenues. Currently, the mobile gaming market stands at around $1.5 billion (in revenue) but it is expected to touch $5 billion by 2025.
“The gaming industry in India has seen a growth of almost 40% in 2019-20, more than that of OTT, television and social media platforms. 86% of this market consists of mobile phone users. While there is large dependence on ad revenues today, increasing traction and engagement is expected to drive higher willingness to pay which will drive new ways of user monetisation and rising ARPUs in the coming years”, says BCG Managing Director and Senior Partner, Vikash Jain.
BCG conducted a consumer survey — of about 3200+ respondents — to gain insights about the gaming habits of the Indian gamer.
Mandeep Kohli, BCG Managing Director and Partner, said that “The Indian gamer is not defined by their demographic. They are rather defined by their context – their needs, preferences, and gaming habits.”
The report further states that the growth will be fuelled by discovery and adoption through casual and free to play games, improving usage and retention by diversifying genres
