Mortal Kombat 12 Gets Its First Teaser With an Exploding Grain of Sand

Two months after the first official mention and announcement of Mortal Kombat 12, the upcoming instalment has revealed its first teaser. Given the cryptic visuals, we’ve been left guessing what new lore NetherRealm might be bringing this time. As far as speculations go, some are saying this might even act as a reboot of the story of Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat is currently celebrating 30 years of the franchise. The latest on the occasion is an appreciation video featuring the developers and the creators of the franchise. The video, which is roughly two minutes long, was posted yesterday on Mortal Kombat’s social handles. However, the last bit includes a 15-second-long animation, which is speculated to be the first official teaser of Mortal Kombat 12.

In the video, we see an hourglass emptying from the inside, as the camera zooms in to focus on one single grain of sand. The grain ultimately explodes, marking the end of the teaser. Since Mortal Kombat 12 has till now only been mentioned once officially, and it is still awaiting its reveal, we can only guess that this is indeed the teaser of the upcoming game, given the title has still not been revealed. Having said that, fans do notice that the hourglass is an object that can be easily connected with the franchise, especially with the Mortal Kombat 11 expansion, Aftermath.

Previously, we had seen the hourglass associated with Kronika, the Keeper of Time. Aftermath gave us two endings, where either Shang Tsung or Liu Kang gain Kronika’s Hourglass and her powers with the aim of creating a “New Era.” We now wonder if Mortal Kombat 11 will be taking the story forward from there, with this New Era acting as a resetting of the timeline itself. Regardless, as evident, we will have to wait for more information to be officially revealed for Mortal Kombat 12, before we can reach further conclusions.
