Mount quits Twitter in unprecedented move during horror Chelsea season

Chelsea star Mason Mount confirmed that he would be deleting his Twitter account and moving his social media presence elsewhere ahead of changes set to take place on the Elon Musk-owned platform. The England man has had a difficult season at Stamford Bridge, having found himself out of the team with the club languishing in mid-table under interim boss Frank Lampard.

Mount has become the first Premier League footballer to announce that he is leaving the popular social media site, as verification checkmarks are said to be removed on Thursday (April 20).

He has switched to another platform, Komi, where he has featured videos, charitable causes and sponsorships on display instead – as he pledged to continue connecting with his fans on the channel.

On Twitter, Mount wrote: “Over the years I’ve thoroughly enjoyed connecting with you all on Twitter. Sadly, the platform is changing so I have decided to delete my account. You all can still connect with me on my other social media platforms here: http://masonmount.Komi.io. Take care, Mason.”

The controversial Twitter change has been said to remove numerous checkmarks from accounts for users who are reluctant to pay £11 a month for the traditional blue badge.

‘Legacy’ blue ticks were initially given to verified accounts belonging to people of public interest including celebrities, politicians, journalists and sportspeople – including Mount.

However, only those subscribed to Twitter Blue can keep a blue tick under the new changes, while businesses must now pay for a gold tick following Musk’s takeover of the website.

Mount’s decision has come at a time when his Chelsea future has been questioned, as the 24-year-old has less than 18 months left on his contract at the club and negotiations over a new deal have reportedly reached an impasse.

With Chelsea facing a potential fire sale following co-owner Todd Boehly’s huge spending spree since his arrival at the club, Mount could be sold this summer as Liverpool especially have been linked with a move for the midfielder.
