NEW DELHI: The Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 42 runs in a high-scoring game on Friday, but their spirited effort was not enough to take them to the IPL play-offs. After posting a mammoth 235 for 9, MI needed to limit SRH to 65 or less to qualify for the play-offs, ahead of KKR on NRR, but expectedly that did not happen. SRH ended with 193 and MI’s IPL 2021 campaign came to an end.

MI were off to an absolute flier: Mumbai Indians knew they had a herculean task, if they were to overhaul KKRs NRR against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Captain Rohit Sharma had won the toss and straightway chose to bat first. Openers Rohit and Ishan Kishan gave Mumbai Indians a magnificent start, putting on 80 runs for the opening wicket in just 5.3 overs.

Ishan Kishan (84 off 32) kept the scoring rate high in the first 10 overs: Rohit scored 18 off 13 balls before being dismissed by Rashid Khan but the swashbuckling Ishan Kishan ensured the scoreboard kept on ticking at a rapid rate. Ishan, who smashed 84 runs off just 32 balls, took MI’s total into the triple figures in just 7.1 overs.

Ishan and Suryakumar Yadav (82 off 40) powered MI to 235/9: Apart from Ishan’s devastating knock, it was Suryakumar Yadav who maintained Mumbai Indians’ dominance against the Orange Army. Surya scored a majestic 82 off just 40 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes, in his blistering knock, as MI reached 235-9 in their 20 overs. Both Ishan and Suryakumar are part of India’s squad for the ICC World T20.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD:
Roy & Abhishek gave SRH a strong start: Chasing Mumbai Indians’ 235 for 9, SRH needed a strong start and openers Jason Roy and Abhishek Sharma gave their team a decent one, putting on 64 runs for the opening wicket. Roy scored 34 off 21 balls, while Abhishek chipped in with a 16-ball 33.

Regular wickets derailed the SRH run chase in the middle overs: SRH’s top order though was soon dismantled by the Mumbai Indians bowlers. James Neesham dismissed Abhishek Sharma (33) and Abdul Samad (2), while Trent Boult removed Jason Roy (34) and Piyush Chawla got rid of Mohammad Nabi (3) to put SRH on the mat. From 64 for 0, SRH crashed to 100 for 4.
