Murthy: Infosys founder Narayana Murthy on why ChatGPT won’t be a big ‘threat’ to jobs – Times of India

Ever since OpenAI developed ChatGPT caught the fancy of the world, there has been a lot of talk about its impending impact on certain kinds of jobs. ChatGPT has got some worried while there are some who have downplayed the impact it might have on human jobs. Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy is in the latter camp.
In an interview with CNBC, Murthy was full of praise for ChatGPT and similar technology. “ChatGPT is an excellent addition to knowledge generation, to doing certain tasks, for example, writing an essay,” he told CNBC.
Human intelligence will matter
Murthy made a valid point about ChatGPT being available for those who want to use it. But also said that it depends how you end up using the tech. “If there is a competition between you and me, you will use the ChatGPT output as your base, and then you will add your own differentiation, your own smartness, your own tweaking,” said the founder of Infosys. However, he added, that, “the lazy guys will get C. Only smart people will get A. Therefore, I am not so much worried about ChatGPT.”
He did acknowledge that ChatGPT is something that he will certainly use. It is an “instrument” that will help people in producing better quality of work but won’t replace humans, he said in the interview. “At the end of the day, I am a great believer in the theory that the human mind is the most powerful imagination, machine. There is nothing that can beat the human mind,” he said.
The AI race has been hotting up with not just Microsoft putting all its might in development and implementation of ChatGPT-like tech but Google has signalled its intentions. Big — for that matter small — companies are betting big on the tech but if the Infosys founder is to be believed, humans shouldn’t really feel too threatened by its advancements.
