Netflix makes blockbuster announcement as movie streaming war hots up

Netflix has unveiled its release schedule for the next year, with the US streaming company pledging to launch a brand-new film each and every week. In total, there will be more than 70 new movies launched on Netflix across 2022, including the highly anticipated sequel Knives Out, which will see James Bond star Daniel Craig reprise his role as southern detective Benoit Blanc. There’s also a remake or horror classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and an adaptation of the West End musical Matilda written by comedian Tim Minchin. All of these new films are in addition to the barrage of boxsets heading to the service this year, including new seasons of hits like Stranger Things, Bridgerton, The Crown and more.

“There’s a great big world of new stories waiting to be discovered,” Netflix boasted as it shared a preview of the movies set to launch on its streaming service in the coming months “This year the Netflix Film universe is expanding with brand new comedies, action-thrillers, mysteries, dramas, sequels and more…dropping every single week.”

Filmmakers such as Judd Apatow (Trainwreck), Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers Endgame), Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) will be dropping new movies on Netflix in 2022. While the upcoming films coming out this year will star big-name Hollywood stars such as Jessica Chastain, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lopez, Colin Firth, Florence Pugh and many more A-listers.

The battle over subscribers’ eyeballs has intensified in recent months. The latest research shows that, while Netflix still dominates across Europe, the number of new subscribers has started to dwindle compared to previous years, and in some European countries, Amazon’s rival Prime Video service is now more popular than Netflix.

Both Prime Video and Disney+ both have a number of their exclusive new releases planned for this year, such as Amazon’s feverishly-anticipated new Lord of the Rings series (tipped to be the most expensive show ever filmed) as well as Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and the continuation of The Mandalorian on Disney+.

Whether the mind-boggling number of new films coming to Netflix this year manage to convince more subscribers to sign-up remains to be seen. But movie fans who are already subscribed can expect to see a huge number of new blockbusters. Here is a full list of the Netflix 2022 movie releases…
