Netflix’s Plan to Crack Down on Password Sharing Revealed; All You Need to Know

Recently, Netflix has been doing the rounds of social media due to the new developments in the company. Some time ago, we were informed that Netflix revealed that it has never cancelled a “successful show”. Before that, we were also told that Netflix would be rolling out their paid password sharing feature “more broadly” in the upcoming months, with co-CEO Reed Hastings later stepping down from his position.

The latest development that we have been informed about sheds more light on Netflix’s efforts to put a stop to password sharing. This information comes from a report by Streamable. Through the report, we have learned all the new details for account sharing on Netflix, provided through an archived page on Netflix Help Center.

The page itself is only available for certain regions such as the United States and other countries. For other regions, Netflix has shared information about a paid password sharing feature that will allow users to add extra members to their account for additional cost. At the moment it seems Netflix is testing both measures out and the company will finalize once they know which one works better. Check out the information revealed through the archived page below:

Wi-Fi Login Every 31 Days

First detail that we have been informed about is that Netflix accounts are shareable, but only within one household. In order to make sure devices that are linked to account are being used in the primary location, users will have to connect to their Wi-Fi in that location at least once every 31 days.

Netflix Accounts Can Only Be Shared in the Same Location

Users will not be able to share accounts if they are not a part of the same household. Users that do try to login to the account from a different household will be prompted to create their own account and their access to the streaming service will be blocked until they do.

Netflix will provide temporary codes

For users that are travelling and still wish to use Netflix on the go will have to ask for a temporary code from the streaming service. Through this code, they will be able to login to their account remotely for seven consecutive days. If the code is not used, then that particular device will be blocked from accessing the Netflix account.

Netflix Knows When You Aren’t at Home

Netflix will be using information such as IP addresses, device IDs and account activity in order to learn whether the user that has signed in is at the primary location or somewhere else. Users will also be able to sign in to their account and sign out from all their devices if their account is being used by an unauthorised individual.

Number of devices depends on the plan you take

Netflix offers tiers to their subscription service and higher the tier, the more devices the customer will be able to use. In both Basic and Basic with Ads plan, users will only be allowed 1 device. Users subscribing to the Standard tier will be allowed 2 devices and subscribers of the Premium tier will be allowed 4 devices.
