Netflix’s Skull Island Animated Series Reveals Release Date, Cast and First Teaser

Legendary Television’s King Kong animated series, Skull Island, will premiere on Netflix in June.

Netflix revealed the release date for the highly-anticipated animated series Tuesday, along with details about the star-studded voice cast and the plot of the series that is loosely based on the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island, which is part of Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise. The company also released a teaser trailer for the show, which you can check out below.

Skull Island revolves around a group of explorers who, during a mission to rescue a woman named Annie (voiced by Mae Whitman), discover that their act of heroism inadvertently takes them to the titular island, which is home to some of the most gruesome monsters. Among them is the legendary gorilla titan, King Kong.

Aside from Whitman, who has lent her voice to various characters in Family Guy and DC Super Hero Girls, the voice cast for Skull Island comprises Never Have I Ever’s Darren Barnet as Mike, Coco’s Benjamin Bratt as Cap, and Mrs. Davis’ Betty Gilpin as Irene.

Skull Island is created, written and executive produced by Brian Duffield, who previously produced Cocaine Bear and wrote the screenplay for the post-apocalyptic thriller Love and Monsters. The animation was produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, which was responsible for two other Netflix animated shows, Castlevania and Blood of Zeus — both of which were done in an anime format. It was also responsible for developing Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence, a Knuckles the Echidna-centric animated short film that served as a prologue for Sonic Frontiers.

Kong: Skull Island releases on June 22.
