Netflix’s Squid Game Reality Show Arrives This November
Netflix has confirmed that Squid Game: The Challenge will debut in November this year.
As reported by NME, the upcoming reality show based on the popular Netflix show Squid Game will give 456 people the chance to win $4.56 million, though no specific premiere date was shared.
“The worst fate is going home empty-handed,” Netflix said when it was announced, making clear the reality show wouldn’t be as intense as the original series.. However, they will still be competing in a series of ruthless children’s games, much like the original show.
“Squid Game took the world by storm with director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” said Netflix VP of unscripted and documentary deries Brandon Riegg.
The show hasn’t been without controversy, however. Squid Game: The Challenge has already come under fire after a report alleged “inhumane conditions” for contestants.
During filming in a former aircraft hanger outside London, contestants faced freezing temperatures and fatigue after being woken up at 3:30 am. They remained on set for nine hours, unable to move for lengthy periods of time due to the specific game they were playing.
Other reports allege that at least 10 contestants collapsed during filming, while contestants claimed they were getting injured shortly after filming began. Medics were called to the set repeatedly with one contestant referring to the show as a “warzone”.
“The second time the song played, I saw in my left peripheral vision that this girl was swaying,” they claimed. “Then she just buckled, and you could hear her head actually hit the ground. But then someone came on the [microphone] and said to hold our positions because the game is not paused. After that, people were dropping like flies.”
Squid Game: The Challenge will feature multiple games across ten episodes, with a series of challenges inspired by the original show along with some “surprising new additions”.
