Neuralink about six months away from first human trial, says Elon Musk – Times of India
Elon Musk showed up at the “Show and tell, Fall 2022” event of his neurotechnology company, Neuralink, showing off its tech at a monkey and pig. Further, adding that the human trial would begin soon, probably in about six months.
Musk’s Neuralink wants to treat brain diseases and give humans AI capabilities
Other than Twitter, Musk owns a few other companies, including Neuralink, which is “developing high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and machines.” In simpler words, the company wants to implant a device within the tiny brains of ours so that we can use computers with our brain activity.
Sounds fancy, right? But, the company’s goal goes beyond this. With its brain-machine interface, Neuralink wants to aid people suffering from paralysis to regain motor function while also treating brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Dementia. He also wants to blend the brain together with artificial intelligence.
However, until now, no trials have been conducted on humans. The only subjects to have been in trials are monkeys and pigs, as appeared in the recent event.
Human trials may begin next year, and monkeys can now type with Neuralink
Musk says that the company wants to be extremely careful with human trials and make sure that the device will work well with humans. He further added that most of the paperwork to commence the trials have been submitted to the Food and Drugs Association (FDA), and he expects to “upload neuralink in a human in about six months.”
“It’s like replacing a piece of your skull with a smartwatch, for lack of a better analogy,” says Musk
The human trials were expected to begin two years ago, in 2020, but then the trials were delayed until this year, i.e. 2022. Now, the trials may start in six months, which means sometime in mid-2023.
Musk could be one of the firsts human to have Neuralink implanted, as he plans to get the device implanted in his brain at some point in time.
It has been three years since Neuaralink began trials on monkeys. Last year, we saw a monkey playing ping pong on a computer with its brain. This year, we saw a video of a monkey typing, “welcome to show and tell,” and “can i please have snacks.” The monkey charged itself wirelessly, and the whole troop has been trained to do so. We do not know if they all were the same or different monkeys.
We also saw a pig running the treadmill. Though we do not know how pigs charge themselves because last we heard, they charged were charging themselves with a pug-shaped charger.
