Back to the Future

It might be time to polish those sunglasses and dig out that trenchcoat, as rumors abound this fine morning that cyberpunk RPG series Deus Ex is gearing up for a return. That’s according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who stated that the longtime developer is deep into its production cycle following its recent release from the Square Enix umbrella.

As reported yesterday, Schreier notes that Eidos Montreal is currently working on the franchise’s new entry alongside several other titles, including a brand-new IP and several co-development projects with Xbox, such as a new release in the high-fantasy series, Fable. The Deus Ex release is said to be in its “very, very early” stages, so I wouldn’t go expecting any announcements until at least later 2023, or perhaps even further down the line. Still, fans will be pleased to hear that the cult series has not been set adrift.

The first Deus Ex title launched on PC way back in 2000, spinning a typically cyberpunkian tale of capitalism gone wild and the nanotech-infused rebels who aim to bring the structure crashing down. While the acclaimed release was followed by several sequels of varying quality, it was the launch of the 2007 epic Deus Ex: Human Revolution that truly brought the series its mainstream success. The most recent game in the series is 2016’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which continued the franchise’s penchant for complex action, deep narrative, and depressingly familiar political overtones.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
