Newcastle boss Eddie Howe fires back at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has warned Jurgen Klopp to be ‘careful’ over comments about his team’s spending. The Liverpool manager made headlines over the weekend by suggesting the Magpies, as well as Manchester City, have ‘no ceiling’ when it comes to their transfer funds.

During his press conference ahead of his club’s weekend fixture against City, Klopp argued that there were three teams in world football who could do anything they wanted financially. He explicitly called out Newcastle by agreeing with Toon sporting director Dan Ashworth that the north-east club had ‘no ceiling’ financially, comments the former Brighton chief had actually made in relation to his new side’s ambitions.

Howe took the opportunity to correct Klopp during his press conference for the Magpies’ mid-week clash with Everton, suggesting Klopp should be more ‘careful’ with his comments given Newcastle have to stay in line with financial fair play regulations.

“It’s a difficult one because it’s probably been used in the wrong way,” he told reporters. “What Dan meant with his comment was there’s no ceiling to our ambition long-term.

“We have huge plans and want to go to places with huge ambitions but the reality of what we are working towards and working with, there is a ceiling because of all the things I have sat here and explained every week: Financial Fair Play, we’re still in a training ground that’s been renovated…we’re not living that life that is being discussed.”

Despite Klopp’s comments, Howe stated he would not dwell on what had been said. However, the Englishman insisted that he would always stand up for his club in the face of inaccuracies.

“I try not to spend too much time thinking about it, but I’m just aware that one or two comments might not be totally accurate,” he said. “That’s when I have to stand up for us.

“When you know the reality and you know the truth of what we have done since I have been here, we have tried to do things in a very controlled way,”

It is not the first time tempers have flared between Liverpool and Newcastle this season, with August’s encounter between the two teams descending into chaos after Fabio Carvalho’s late equaliser as both benches entered a heated argument.
