Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has defended his transfer record amid criticism that a string of his signings flopped when he was in charge of Bournemouth. Howe was appointed as the Magpies head coach earlier this month following their mega-money takeover.
During his time on the south coast, Howe signed Callum Wilson, Nathan Ake and Matt Ritchie, who were all successful at the Vitality Stadium before departing for big money.
Howe also signed Kieran Tripper, Danny Ings and Ben Mee during his brief spell in charge of Burnley.
But the 43-year-old has also had some catastrophes in the transfer market.
Howe persuaded Bournemouth bosses to shell out a total of £71million on Dominic Solanke, Jordan Ibe, Jefferson Lerma and Diego Rico. And all four players flattered to deceive in Dorset.
“We made some very, very good signings and we made some signings that weren’t so good,” Howe admitted.

“You can’t be everywhere, you can’t be watching targets somewhere else, so that’s where the people bringing the players to you need to do very good.”
Newcastle are apparently set to spend £50million in January as they attempt to bring in players who can help them avoid relegation to the Championship.
The north east side are bottom of the Premier League table and have failed to win a game all season.
Howe will be under pressure to sign players who can be instant hits at St James’ Park – and the former defender says he would be open to working alongside a transfer chief to ensure the Magpies get their transfers right.
“For me, it’s essential at the top level of the game that you have a structure,” Howe continued.
“Whatever structure that is, you have a structure that works for your club, and you have people in position that can help you manage.
“All the various branches need to be run to the best of their ability. It’s not my decision what happens above me here, and that’s not my right to make that call but, if it did happen, it’s something I would embrace.”
