Newcastle in ‘pole position’ to pip Juventus to Man Utd flop Depay

Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as favourites to secure the signature of Barcelona star Memphis Depay, who was expected to leave the club over the summer. The Dutchman has made just two league appearances for the Catalan giants so far this season.

Juventus were heavily linked with Depay over the summer, with the Serie A side desperate to provide cover for former Arsenal target Dusan Vlahovic. However, the plug was pulled late in the window and it was decided that the 28-year-old would remain at the club.

But a transfer for the former Manchester United forward now appears on the horizon, with Tutto Juve reporting that Newcastle are set to beat Juventus for the versatile playmaker’s signature. It is believed that Depay’s £158,000-per-week wages will not be a problem for the Toon Army and they have ‘more than enough’ funds to bring the forward back to the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side have already made a marquee signing in the final third by welcoming Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in a deal worth approximately £59million. Callum Wilson has also reportedly agreed to extend his stay at St James’ Park, given Eddie Howe options in the final third.

But the pair have both struggled with injuries previously and the former Bournemouth boss now appears keen to sign another No 9 option. Depay would prove a cut-price acquisition in the January transfer window given that his contract expires at Barca in 2023.

Though Newcastle could be tempted to wait until the end of the campaign and cope without the former Lyon star if they decide that they do not want to spend any of their transfer budget on the forward. Though if the player enjoys a successful World Cup campaign with the Netherlands then other suitors will certainly arrive before that stage.
