Newcastle players ‘want Steve Bruce sacked before Crystal Palace clash’ after bust-up

Newcastle players apparently want Steve Bruce to be sacked before their Premier League clash at Crystal Palace on Saturday. The Magpies have failed to win a game all season and tensions boiled over following their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday when captain Jamaal Lascelles and team-mate Isaac Hayden had to be pulled apart in the tunnel area.

Newcastle took the lead in the second minute against Spurs at St James’ Park as Callum Wilson notched on his return from injury.

But Tottenham were all but out of sight by the interval as Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min scored to put the visitors 3-1 ahead.

And, despite an own goal from away defender Eric Dier in the closing stages, Newcastle ended yet another match with nothing to show for their endeavours.

That result left Bruce’s side second bottom of the Premier League table and three points adrift of safety – and the players’ frustrations were shown after the final whistle.

According to the Daily Mail, Lascelles and Hayden went head-to-head and exchanged shoves in the tunnel area as they were leaving the pitch. And club staff had to intervene to pull the duo apart.

There was speculation that Bruce would be instantly dismissed but he was allowed to take charge of his 1000th professional game on Sunday.

Ahead of the clash, new club director Amanda Staveley said the Magpies wouldn’t be rushing into any hasty decisions.

“We have had an extremely busy week reviewing the business and getting to know people and it is imperative that we continue to be patient and considered in our approach,” Staveley said.

“Change does not always happen overnight, it demands time and that we follow a carefully considered plan and strategy.

“We met Steve and the players on Monday and have given them the time and space this week to focus on preparing for what is a very important game on Sunday.

“Steve has been very professional in our dealings with him and he and his coaching team will take the team on Sunday.

“If we make any changes going forward, Steve will be the first to know.”
