Newcastle transfer meeting this week may raise Chelsea and Liverpool alarm bells

Newcastle are set for crunch transfer talks before their final Premier League game of the season that may have huge ramifications for the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool going forward. The Premier League years were long dominated by a ‘Big Four’ comprising of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Manchester City then entered the party with their mega-rich owners to shake things up while Tottenham began to knock on the door due to Gareth Bale and then Harry Kane’s talents. Newcastle now appear to be the next club set to ruin the dominance of the original top teams in the Premier League.

The Saudi-backed takeover in 2021 saw huge promises made with the hope they would be challenging for titles within five years. Lofty expectations are often made when new ownerships come in, but having vast amounts of money doesn’t always correlate to huge success – as Chelsea have proven this very season under Todd Boehly.

But Newcastle have backed up their promises with a sensational turnaround under Eddie Howe. St James’ Park has been turned into a fortress once again with Champions League football returning to Tyneside for the first time since 2002.

It’s the exact kind of scenario that teams like Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham this year wanted to avoid happening desperately. All three teams have missed out on qualifying for Europe’s elite competition just 12 months after finishing inside the top four.

Liverpool and Chelsea may have just written this season off as a one-off setback with confidence next year would see them back on track. But Newcastle aren’t resting on their laurels with the Telegraph reporting that a transfer meeting will take place in the coming days to discuss their budget for the summer window.

Qualifying for the Champions League has supposedly seen the club ‘revise their spending plan’ with Howe expected to be heavily backed in the market. That could come as a huge blow to the teams outside of the top four hoping to return to Champions League football in 2024.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are all expected to improve in the summer transfer window too. And Newcastle’s emergence makes qualifying for the top four even more difficult for those who underperformed this year.

The fact they now also have football’s richest owners to help fund their ambitions will only make Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham’s task even tougher heading into next season.
