Newcastle’s double £105m transfer plan can ultimately copy Liverpool and Man Utd

Newcastle appear to be focusing their transfer efforts on improving the left side of their starting line-up with Sandro Tonali the first piece of the puzzle. Alexander Isak was also used out on the left wing towards the end of the season by Eddie Howe and signing a left-back would complete the set.

Dan Burn ended up becoming a fan favourite in his unorthodox role at left-back last season but Howe made no secret that a more recognised full-back was what he wanted. Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney has strongly been linked with a move to St James’ Park, but it appears as though they’ve turned their attention to Antonee Robinson.

According to the Evening Standard, Newcastle are among several clubs showing an interest in the Fulham star. It’s claimed that Fulham would want a fee in the region of £35million for the 25-year-old, who earned rave reviews for his displays last season under Marco Silva.

But the report also adds that Robinson is refusing to sign a new deal with the Cottagers, leaving Fulham in a weaker negotiating position as he only has 12 months remaining on his contract. Newcastle aren’t alone in showing an interest in Robinson with Manchester City, AC Milan and Inter Milan also monitoring his situation.

However, Newcastle’s interest in Robinson as well as the incoming arrival of Tonali can ultimately give Howe a completely new weapon down the left flank. Robinson has shown flashes of his skillset going forward at Fulham and he’d be given more licence to bomb forward at Newcastle.

Tonali can operate in a deep-lying role, but he’s also played on the left of a midfield three in a more attacking role. If Howe sticks with using Isak as a left winger also then that trio could become Newcastle’s most lethal weapon.

It’s been shown in the past how finding the right formula down one flank can be the key for any team pushing for silverware. Liverpool have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah down the right, who have been key to their success over the years.

Going back even further and Manchester United had the perfect duo in Gary Neville and David Beckham for years. Football has evolved since then but its proven to be a successful route for many when finding the right formula down one flank.

Time will tell how Tonali and potentially Robinson fit in at Newcastle, but the target is clear for all to see. Howe wants to revolutionise that left flank and signing Tonali is only the start of it.
