Nick Kyrgios issues damning reaction to Novak Djokovic losing appeal at Australian Open

Nick Kyrgios has taken to Twitter to express his disappointment with the decision to uphold the cancellation of Novak Djokovic’s visa ahead of next week’s Australian Open. The Serb will not be allowed to defend his title in Melbourne after losing his appeal against the previous ruling of Australia’s immigration minister Alex Hawke at a court hearing on Sunday morning.

Djokovic was detained shortly upon his arrival in Australia earlier this month after questions were raised over his medical exemption from receiving a COVID-19 vaccine to enter the country.

It was eventually decided on Monday that his visa cancellation order would be immediately quashed and that he would be released from detention.

However, this verdict was sensationally overturned by Hawke on Friday to leave Djokovic’s fate hanging in the balance.

His last-ditch appeal was heard on Sunday morning but the complaints of his legal team were unanimously thrown out by all three judges.

The result of the hearing means that Djokovic will not be able to compete at this year’s Australian Open, which is set to get underway on Monday.

The world No 1 is now set to be deported from the country and will be forced to wait until the French Open in May for his next opportunity to clinch a record-breaking 21st career Grand Slam title.

Kyrgios, who has recently spoken out in support of Djokovic, reacted to Sunday’s ruling by posting an emoji with its head in its hands on Twitter in another public display of solidarity with his fellow player.

The 26-year-old revealed earlier this week that he has already been in contact with Djokovic, who personally thanked him for refusing to join the condemnation of his actions before Sunday’s verdict was delivered.

“Novak has reached out to me personally on Instagram, saying: ‘Thank you for standing up for me’,” explained Kyrgios on his No Boundaries podcast.

“I was not the one he was expecting to go out in the media and have his back. As a human, he’s obviously feeling quite alienated in all of this.

“As a human, that’s a dangerous place to be in – when you feel like the world is against you, like you can’t do anything right.”
