Nick Kyrgios has passionately backed Novak Djokovic to go all the way at Wimbledon after the Serb’s quarter-final win over Andrey Rublev. Kyrgios, who faced Djokovic in last year’s final, was forced to sit out the 2023 tournament due to injury.
With only a precious few players on tour possessing the talent to challenge Djokovic at SW19, many were left disappointed by Kyrgios’ late withdrawal, given that the Aussie is among the chosen few that may have upset the odds.
Kyrgios took the first set in last year’s final at the All England Club, but he eventually lost in four as Djokovic continued his imperious unbeaten record on Centre Court. A budding bromance and a mutual respect added an extra storyline to the encounter, and the pair are evidently still on each others’ side.
That much became clear on Tuesday night, when Djokovic posted on Instagram to mark his quarter-final win over Rublev.
The picture of Djokovic celebrating was captioned: “An absolute privilege! What an atmosphere… thank you for the amazing love and support!! See you Friday.” The Serb must now gear up for a mouth-watering semi-final clash with eighth seed Jannik Sinner.
And Kyrgios has made it clear who he will be supporting, as he commented on Djokovic’s post: “GO WIN IT BIG DAWG.” Many view world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz as the most dangerous challenger in the men’s draw, and the 20-year-old’s campaign is alive and kicking ahead of a quarter-final clash with Holger Rune on Wednesday.
Berrettini responded by taking the first set against Alcaraz, at which point Kyrgios added: “Looks like my insight is credible. Alcaraz is the underdog in this match.”
The tables soon turned, however, as Alcaraz found another gear and strung together the next three sets, taking the match 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3. A highly-anticipated meeting between Djokovic and Alcaraz is still on the cards for Sunday’s final, but the Serb has already made it clear that he sees himself as the favourite, regardless of who he comes up against.
