Nico Rosberg highlights Red Bull’s conundrum to partner Max Verstappen next season

Lewis Hamilton’s former team-mate Nico Rosberg believes Pierre Gasly’s form this season could make him a viable candidate to partner Max Verstappen next year, and the Red Bull team should seriously consider putting him alongside the Dutchman.

The Alpha Tauri driver has been constant in the midfield this season, often finishing in the points, and currently sits P8 in the driver standings, beating his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda.

Gasly has been called up from the junior team once before when they went by the name Toro Rosso ahead of the 2019 season.

However, it didn’t work out for the Frenchman, who took a maiden victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, admitting he felt like “people there slowly began to turn on me” after his first mistake.

However, Rosberg believes the 25-year-old should be given another chance to partner Verstappen next season, despite Sergio Perez settling in well at the Milton-Keynes-based team.

Verstappen was promoted from Toro Rosso five races into 2016 alongside Daniel Ricciardo at the time, replacing Russia’s Daniil Kvyat, yet since that move, there has been a revolving door of drivers at the team alongside the Dutchman including Albon and Gasly.

Perez this season, however, has been a constant performer after stepping over to Red Bull at the end of last season as Racing Point ditched the Mexican.

And with Verstappen battling out with Hamilton for the driver’s title, Rosberg added: “It is phenomenal how Red Bull is throwing in these incredible drivers that Max Verstappen has as team-mates and no one can ever get with five-tenths of a second per lap.
