Nicolas Cage on Marvel: ‘I Don’t Need To be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage’
While accepting an award at the Miami Film Festival, actor Nicolas Cage stated that he doesn’t “need to be in the MCU”, because “I’m Nic Cage”.
As reported by Variety, the comments were made as Cage accepted the Variety Legend and Groundbreaker award when he discussed past projects and gave his thoughts on the superhero movie genre.
Cage said he doesn’t understand concerns raised by some members of Hollywood over the dominance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I understand what the frustration is. I get it. But I think there’s plenty of room for everybody,” he said. “I’m seeing movies like ‘Tár.’ I’m seeing all kinds of artistic and independently driven movies. I think there’s plenty of room for everybody.”
Whilst Cage has played the Marvel comic book antihero Ghost Rider in multiple films already, he was also asked if he’d like to appear in a contemporary Marvel project. “I don’t need to be in the MCU,” he said. “I’m Nic Cage”.
The actor, whose original name is Nicolas Kim Coppola, also touched on the superhero connection to his adopted stage name. “I’ve gotta be nice about Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage,” he said.
The star also discussed other comic book movie connections, like his opportunity to play superman in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives, a project which never made it to the big screen. “It was more of a 1980s Superman with like, the samurai black long hair,” said Cage. “I thought it was gonna be a really different, sort of emo Superman, but we never got there.”
Cage’s next movie, Renfield, is slated for release on April 14 later this year, and will see the actor step into the blood-soaked shoes of the iconic villain Dracula.
