Nier: Automata Anime Will Tell an Original Story as Yoko Taro is Also Involved in the Writing

At the Aniplex Online Fest 2022 on September 24, it was announced that Square Enix and Platinum Game’s Nier: Automata will receive an anime adaptation. A trailer was also released with the announcement along with the reveal of the anime’s premiere date: January 2023.

Afterwards, further information regarding who will be involved in the anime was also released. As for the voice actors, Yui Ishikawa will play 2B, and Natsuki Hanae will play 9S. The studio behind popular anime like Sword Art Online and most recently Lycoris Recoil – A-1 Pictures – will produce the anime.

The anime is titled NieR:Automata Ver1.1a, and it was first announced back in February. After months of silence, we have more information regarding the series. In a preview video released for the anime, original game creator Yoko Taro makes an appearance to talk about the anime with anime director Ryoji Masuyama.

Taro said that when he first heard about making an anime version, he thought, “What? This late?” as usually an anime version is released around the time when the game comes out to increase sales. Taro also said that Nier: Automata’s story was crafted specifically to play out in a video game. “The title Nier: Automata was a story we created to be a game, so copying it as is wouldn’t make an interesting story for an anime. So I brought up the idea of changing things around.” However, the anime’s director tried to keep the story as similar to the game as possible.

Nier: Automata came out in 2017. The action RPG has a sci-fi story that deals with humans launching an attack using android soldiers while being in danger of extinction.
