Nong-O ordained as Buddhist monk after surviving dengue fever ‘crisis’

Former ONE Championship bantamweight Muay Thai king Nong-O Hama has been ordained as a Buddhist monk to honour the doctors and nurses who helped him during his “life-threatening” battle with dengue fever.

The 36-year-old Thai spent four days in an intensive care unit this month suffering from late stage symptoms of the disease, ONE chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong told the Post.

But after surviving the ordeal, Nong-O decided to “make merit” – a traditional Thai ritual of donating religious service to Buddhist temples. ONE flyweight Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon went through the same ritual in January before his wedding, where he converted to Islam.

A post on Nong-O’s official Facebook fan page on Thursday showed pictures of him with a shaved head, wearing traditional orange robes, with his family including his two young sons with him.

“He has left for ordination for 15 days, to make merit in return for doctors and nurses at Piyavate Hospital who helped take care of him and maintained him until he could come back strong,” the post read.

“And the monk still wishes his family, friends, fans, and everyone only happiness, comfort, and good health.”

The post also included a personal message from Nong O.

“Thank you my dear team. To the fan club, don’t worry about the monk. Give me some time to meditate,” he wrote.

Chatri told the Post that before his illness, Nong-O had been in line for a rematch with Jonathan Haggerty, who took the belt from him in April with a stunning first-round KO at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.

Petchtanong, 37, went to see Nong-O after he was ordained, and asked his training partner to “give me a blessing” in his own Facebook post.

A post on Nong-O’s personal Facebook account confirmed he had “passed through the crisis” and was “in recovery” on August 9.

“I was sick with dengue fever and Influenza B strains were also present,” he added. “I had to administer and treat myself in the hospital and due to two illnesses at the same time, it was necessary to be admitted to the ICU for three nights and four days to be in close care of the doctor.

“And now it’s out of danger. nothing to worry about.”

Nong-O also promised to “come back to fight for everyone, to see each other again”.

“Thank you all who cheered for a rematch with Jonathan and I hope that all fans will wait to see the works of the King,” he said.
