NordVPN Considering Exiting India Following Government Ruling on Data Sharing
NordVPN is a service that provides the user with a virtual private network to keep their internet browsing safe and private. This VPN has reached massive popularity due to its multiple collaborations with content creators across all platforms. NordVPN is also regarded as one of the top VPN services in the market at the moment.
NordVPN’s main proposition is privacy, it provides the user with a guarantee that they will be able to surf the internet without worrying about their personal information being stolen or misused. VPNs also mask the user’s IP address in order to protect their identity and information.
According to the latest report by Entrackr, it seems like NordVPN may remove their servers from India in the near future. This move has been brought upon by a new law that has been enforced upon virtual private networks and cryptocurrency exchanges by the The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The new law dictates that these services are supposed to preserve customer data and provide it to the government. These services will have to register the user’s name, ownership pattern, contact information and the reason for which they selected that particular service.
This new rule will directly obstruct one of the main features that these services provide and that is privacy. NordVPN has constantly advertised how they work to preserve their user’s privacy and through this new law all their efforts will go down the drain. This new law is being implemented in India so that they are able to coordinate response measures and emergency services when a cyber threat occurs.
NordVPN will not be the only service that will pull out from the country, other VPN services that advertise privacy will also leave when this law comes in to effect. NordVPN has most of its servers in Mumbai, through which people from the country are able to access the web in a safe and private manner. These servers will be taken down as soon as the new law comes in to effect.
NordVPN has not provided a concrete statement on whether they are leaving the country, they have only stated that they will leave if there are no other options. As of now the company is investigating the law and finding a course of action, the service will work as usual until the new rule comes into effect, which is in the next 2 months.
