Norrie punished for ‘shouting’ by French Open umpire after Djokovic complaints

Cameron Norrie lost a point at the French Open as the umpire penalised him for hindrance. The Brit was leading Benoit Paire by a set but went on to get broken early in the second after the chair official said he was “shouting” during the rally. It comes less than two weeks after Novak Djokovic called Norrie out for his shouts of “come on!” during their match in Rone.

Norrie was punished in his opening match at the French Open as the chair umpire called him up on hindrance. The 14th seed was embroiled in a rally with Paire at 30-30 in the third game of the second set when the point was stopped by the chair official as the Frenchman sent the ball long.

Norrie lost the point as a result of the gall, which gave Paire a break point. And he made the most of it, breaking to lead 2-1 after losing the opening set 7-5.

It comes after multiple players complained about the Brit shouting “come on!” after winning points during their recent matches. Djokovic slammed the 27-year-old after beating him in Rome recently as he claimed Norrie wasn’t playing fair. “From the very beginning, I don’t know, he was doing all the things that were allowed,” the world No 3 said.

“He’s allowed to take a medical timeout. He’s allowed to hit a player. He’s allowed to say C’mon in the face more or less every single point from basically [the] first game. Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it’s not fair play, it’s not how we treat each other. But, again, it’s allowed, so…”
