Nothing CEO Carl Pei on why Android faces a challenge to beat iOS – Times of India
London-based tech startup Nothing launched its first phone — Phone (1) — earlier this year. Carl Pei, CEO, Nothing, has openly said why Android could struggle against the dominance of Apple. In an interview with CNBC, Pei has once again reiterated his stance.
Pei said that while Nothing has all the intentions to take on Apple in the US it might be a bit difficult. In the interview he said that Android has a challenge “where iOS is just becoming more and more dominant.”
Apple’s strong ‘lock-in’ features
The Nothing CEO said that there are certain features iOS gives which are a big hit with Gen Z. “They have very strong lock-in with iMessage, with AirDrop, especially among Gen Z. So that’s a rising concern for me,” he said in the interview. Pei feels that Apple could end up having as much 80% of the market share. “There might be a time where Apple is like 80% of the overall market and that just does not leave enough space for Android-based manufacturers to keep playing,” he said.
Nothing didn’t launch the Phone (1) in the US market but Pei confirmed that his company plans to enter the market soon. While he didn’t say in the exact words that it will be Phone (1) but said, “we are in discussions with some carriers in the US to potentially launch a future product there.” He also explained why Nothing refrained from launching the Phone (1) in the US. “The reason why we didn’t launch in the US is because you need a lot of additional technical support, to support all the carriers and their unique customisations that they need to make on top of Android,” he told CNBC in the interview.
