Novak Djokovic cheered on by Jose Mourinho as Roma manager attends Italian Open
Djokovic was making his comeback in Rome after missing Madrid through injury. The top seed started his title defence against Etcheverry with a familiar face watching on.
Mourinho was enjoying a night off after his side won the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday evening, which saw the likes of world No 3 Daniil Medvedev in attendance. It’s not the first time that the renowned football manager has watched one of the Serb’s matches.
He attended Djokovic’s Wimbledon semi-final in 2019 when the world No 1 defeated Roberto Bautista Agut and eventually went on to lift the title. And Mourinho used to be a frequent guest at the ATP Finals when they were held in London, as the event coincided with his reign as Chelsea boss.
The reigning champion was in some trouble early on in the match, as he was broken in the opening game. But he was able to draw level at 3-3 with Mourinho watching on.
The 60-year-old wasn’t the only notable face in attendance, as tennis legend Stefan Edberg was in the crowd while Carlos Alcaraz’s dad also came to watch the match, potentially scouting out the competition.
