Novak Djokovic confesses to ‘torturing’ his coach after winning French Open

Novak Djokovic admitted that he had been “torturing” his coach during the French Open after winning the title to capture a record 23rd Major trophy. The Serb is now the most decorated male player in Grand Slam history. And he got candid as he thanked his support team during his victory speech.

Djokovic achieved one of his ultimate goals on Sunday as he won a record 23rd men’s singles Grand Slam title. The third seed defeated Casper Ruud 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 to rewrite history – also becoming the first man to win all four Majors at least three times.

And the 36-year-old had a confession to make after his monumental victory, as he said he had been torturing his coach throughout the tournament. Addressing his team and family, Djokovic said: “You know what we’ve been through, the trials and tribulations every single day.

“You know how difficult I can be on a daily basis so I want to thank you first of all for patience and tolerance. Because probably that stands out more than anything else, knowing what I’ve done to you the last few weeks.”

The 36-year-old continued: “People don’t know but behind the closed doors I was really torturing you so I really appreciate being my rock, being my support and believing in me. I really appreciate that.”

Ivanisevic could be seen laughing as Djokovic admitted that he had been a handful. And the Serb went on to share a special message for his children, who were watching on from the stands.

“My kids are here and I always try to convey some values, some messages, something that they can learn from, something that they can draw some inspiration [from]. And I really hope – judging by their smiles – I think they are enjoying it,” he said.

And Djokovic had one last message as he gave shoutouts to Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kylian Mbappe and Tom Brady. The footballers were in the stands for the match while Brady had been invited into Djokovic’s player box.

The newly-crowned champion said: “I want to thank football stars for being here – Giroud, Ibra, Mbappe, Tom Brady. I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting. I hope you guys enjoyed. I’m sorry if I missed somebody but it’s a great honour to have incredible football and sports stars.”

Ibrahimovic – a good friend of Djokovic’s – made a heart with his hands as the Serb gave him a special shoutout. And the world No 3 promised to return, adding: “But everybody else, thank you for coming and see you next year.”
