Novak Djokovic left feeling ‘miserable’ at Wimbledon after curfew delayed win
Novak Djokovic has admitted to feeling “miserable” throughout his match against Hubert Hurkacz in what proved to be a painful match for both players as well as spectators watching. It was always going to be a testing match for Djokovic with Hurkacz’s big serve suiting the grass surface.
What was also clear early on was that rallies weren’t on either player’s agenda in this match. Rarely was there a point that lasted more than four shots with both producing some top tennis on serve.
Hurkacz failed to create a single break point opportunity on Djokovic’s serve until the third set, where the Pole converted to force a fourth. But Djokovic didn’t let the rails come off as he soon recomposed himself to eventually take the set and progress to the quarter finals.
It was far from comfortable for Djokovic though, as the match had to be suspended late on Sunday night due to the curfew. And the seven-time Wimbledon champion admitted that he was desolate throughout the match as he grew more and more frustrated at not being able to get many points on his opponent’s serve.
“Honestly I don’t recall the last time I felt this miserable on returning games,” Djokovic said. “He has one of the best serves in the world and it’s so difficult to read it playing on the quickest surfaces in the sport – grasscourt – it really favours big servers so it was not enjoyable for me.
“In the important moments – yesterday and last night – I was fortunate to win that first set. I was 6-3 down in the tiebreak. This match could have gone a different way but I guess held my nerves when it mattered.”
