Novak Djokovic hit back at the French Open crowd as he was booed while receiving a medical time out. As the world No 3 had his thigh rubbed down, he started waving the fans on as they jeered him before sarcastically giving a thumbs up and clapping.
Djokovic found himself in a gruelling match in the third round as he just managed to take the first two sets against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The world No 3 needed a tiebreak in both, with the opening two sets taking almost three hours.
After he won the second 7-6(5), his opponent left the court for a bathroom break while the Serb called the trainer for a medical time out. Djokovic then had his thigh massaged by the trainer as the spectators suddenly started booing him for taking the break even though Davidovich Fokina wasn’t on the court.
And the two-time former champion in Paris wasn’t having it, as he riled them up further by waving his arm in the air. Djokovic then showed the spectators a thumbs up before clapping them sarcastically.
And Djokovic was backed up by John McEnroe, who was commentating for Eurosport. The retired tennis legend thought that the world No 3 was well within his right to take the treatment break – especially because Davidovich Fokina had left the court.
“So that was an instance to me where a player took a medical time out – in Novak’s case – and didn’t hold up the match because Davidovich Fokina was off the court, came back and they pretty much started when he got back,” the seven-time Major champion said.
