Novak Djokovic seeks Roger Federer’s help for revenge over Jack Sock
Novak Djokovic sought out Roger Federer’s help during his doubles match at the Laver Cup on Saturday as he looked to get revenge over Team World’s Jack Sock. The American partnered Frances Tiafoe to beat Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Swiss star’s last-ever match on day one of the tournament, and Djokovic wanted to hear Federer’s experience of facing the four-time doubles Major winner.
Djokovic is on double duty on day two of the Laver Cup, as he was straight back out on court for the doubles after giving Team Europe a 6-4 lead with his 6-1 6-3 victory over Team World’s Frances Tiafoe in the singles. Teaming up with Matteo Berrettini, the pair are taking on Jack Sock and Alex De Minaur to sustain their lead ahead of the final day.
Sock has already got a doubles win over Europe to his name at the 2022 Laver Cup, as he forced Federer to end his career with a defeat when he and Tiafoe beat Federer and Nadal in the 41-year-old’s last-ever match before retiring. And Djokovic appears keen to get revenge as he asked Federer for advice during one of the changeovers in the first set.
“Where did he serve yesterday, what is he like, Jack?” the world No 7 asked his long-time rival as Federer and Andy Murray approached the bench at a change-of-ends. “On your side, or…?” Federer responded, with Djokovic clarifying: “On both sides.”
JUST IN: Nadal asked how he wants his retirement to be after Federer farewell
The former doubles world No 2 put up a heartfelt Instagram post in tribute of Federer’s career, writing: “The emotions tonight were something I will never forget. You’ve always been an idol and role model for both the game of tennis and myself, so sharing the court for your last match will be something to remember forever.
“We’ve had some great times on the court and I’ll cherish those for life. You are the goat. You will be missed Roger!” And the morning after playing his final match against the American, Federer was full of praise for his opponent in the comments, writing: “Great match big fella. The forehand was rocking as usual.”
