Novak Djokovic shares big aspirations as his son takes to French Open court
Novak Djokovic has shared his big dream for his son as both of his children watched him advance to the French Open quarter-final. Eight-year-old Stefan is an avid tennis fan and joined the world No 3 for both his pre-match training session and his warm-up in the gym. And Djokovic believes that his son could even be playing Roland Garros one day.
Djokovic made French Open history with his victory over Juan Pablo Varillas, booking his spot in a record 17th quarter-final in Paris. And he had some extra special supporters in the stands, with Stefan and his five-year-old daughter Tara cheering him on.
And the third seed was asked about the extra additions to his team during his on-court interview after a dominant 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory. “It’s a pleasure for me to see them both, my son and my daughter yesterday, today and tomorrow,” he said.
Djokovic also admitted that Stefan gave him a boost after his son joined his preparations. “When I’m with my son, who loves tennis, I’m a different person. It gives me a lot of motivation and inspiration to play,” he said.
“He loves tennis and maybe, he’ll play here one day.” It’s not the first time Stefan has been spotted trying to join his dad’s entourage at a tournament, as he often joined Djokovic on the Wimbledon practice courts and would hit with the son of doubled legend Bob Bryan.
He has also been spotted in the 22-time Major champion’s box on multiple occasions – sometimes sporting his own tennis kit. And Stefan even won a tournament on the same day as his father last year.
While Djokovic was busy lifting the title at the 2022 Italian Open, Stefan was playing his first tournament. “I mean I never forced him to play tennis, it was really fully his decision,” the Serb said at the time.
“And he wanted to play a tournament for a long time now and he’s playing a club tournament, a very small one, but still it’s very meaningful for him and for me as well as his dad. So I hope that he just enjoyed you know, it doesn’t matter that he won or lost just that he enjoyed, and I’m very eager to hear what is his experience on the court.”
