Novak Djokovic smashes racket with attack on net post in Wimbledon final

Novak Djokovic lost his cool in the fifth set to the point where he smashed his racket against the net post in front of the chair umpire in a fit of rage. The 2023 Wimbledon men’s final was always going to be a tight affair between the best two players in the world.

It ebbed and flowed between the two of them with Djokovic taking the first set before going down 2-1. Djokovic had never before faced a 2-1 set deficit in a Wimbledon final before having dominated most.

Andy Murray was the only man to beat Djokovic in a Wimbledon final back in 2013 – Djokovic’s last defeat on Centre Court. But Alcaraz was pushing Djokovic all the way and the Serb was on the edge of controlling his temper throughout.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion took out some frustrations earlier in the match against umpire Fergus Murphy over the time clock for his serves. However, it was the crowd’s overwhelming support for Djokovic which was once again angering the Serb.

As the match headed into a fifth set, it was clear who the crowd were getting behind to win the match. Every Alcaraz winner was being applauded with booming cheers and that atmosphere got the better of Djokovic in the third game while on serve.

The Spaniard hit a stunning winner past Djokovic to break his opponent and put him in control of the match once again. Djokovic lost his cool before taking his frustrations out on the net post directly under the umpire’s chair.
