Nuno Espirito Santo sacked by Tottenham as Daniel Levy wields axe once more

Tottenham have sensationally sacked boss Nuno Espirito Santo following Saturday’s 3-0 thrashing by Manchester United. Spurs were booed off by their supporters and have now won just two of their last five matches.

Nuno’s side embarrassingly failed to register a shot on target against United. This was a Red Devils team who were fragile having been smashed 5-0 by Liverpool the week before and yet they comfortably breezed beyond the North Londoners.

Chairman Daniel Levy is now looking for a new manager for the third time in two years. He sacked Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019.

Jose Mourinho succeeded the Argentine but was dismissed in April after a dismal run of form.

A chaotic recruitment process eventually led to Levy appointing former Wolves boss Nuno in June. Spurs apparently spoke to each of Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso but deals fell through for all three.

Nuno enjoyed a successful start to the season and appeared to have fitted seamlessly into life at the club. There were victories in each of their opening three Premier League matches, including against Manchester City, but their fortunes soon collapsed.

The 48-year-old lost his first North London Derby and was last weekend beaten by rivals West Ham.

Spurs are also scrapping to qualify from their Europa Conference League group having won just one of their three Group G matches. They were most recently beaten by Vitesse.

“I’m only thinking about the next training session. There are no words that are going to solve this situation. The booing and disappointment of the fans is understandable,” Nuno said of the reaction by supporters on Saturday.
