Fake ChatGPT apps exploiting, overcharging users

The newly developed iOS app will enable users to tackle multiple fraudulent ChatGPT applications that have emerged on the internet in the recent past. According to a report from cybersecurity company Sophos, certain app developers are producing counterfeit ChatGPT applications with the intention of deceiving users into purchasing costly subscriptions, ultimately resulting in monetary theft.

As per the report, there has been an increase in mobile apps claiming to be connected to the ChatGPT AI platform. These apps fall under the category of “fleeceware,” which refers to apps that exhibit similar behaviours mentioned below.

  • The functionality can be accessed for free either through the mobile operating system or other online sources.
  • The company encourages users to sign up for a brief free trial, which then automatically converts into a costly recurring subscription fee in order to generate revenue from unsuspecting individuals.
  • The free version is made difficult to use with intrusive advertising and other features, which are designed to encourage users to subscribe.
