Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be ‘desperate’ to put things right as the pressure rises on him amid his side’s awful form. The Red Devils’ 4-2 defeat to Leicester on Saturday means they have now won just two of their last seven games in all competitions, and they have fallen down to sixth place in the Premier League.
Some United fans have seen enough and are calling for Solskjaer to be replaced, with the likes of Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane potentially waiting in the wings.
However, the Norwegian manager is still said to have the backing of the Glazer family, who remain convinced he is the right man to take them forward.
Reports have stated that Solskjaer kept the United team locked in the dressing room for 45 minutes after the Leicester game as he read his side the riot act.
And according to The Telegraph the former striker is not throwing in the towel yet, and is determined to put things right in the coming weeks.
He is, however, aware that the upcoming games against Atalanta, Liverpool and Tottenham are crucial, and knows that his position could become untenable if results do not dramatically improve soon.
Solskjaer only signed an extended three year contract in the summer, meaning it would be costly for the Glazers to sack him.
And the American owners are thought to get on with the coach on a personal level, and do not have any desire to give him the axe unless they are left with absolutely no other option.
On Monday, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher discussed what they feel the future holds for Solskjaer.
And Carragher clearly believes United need to make a change if they are to start competing for major titles again.
“Solskjaer has done a good job at United, it could have gone horribly wrong,” he said.
“He came with experience from Scandinavia and Cardiff City. I said it about [Frank] Lampard, this will never change, though, Solskjaer will not win a Champions League or a league title as Manchester United manager. He’s not at the level of [Jurgen] Klopp, Pep [Guardiola] or [Thomas] Tuchel.
“Ole has not got that experience, he’s done a good job to get this point. Whether he wins a trophy or not at the end of the season, Manchester United need to have a better manager.”
Neville added: “He should be under massive pressure, because he’s been there for two years – 100 per cent. But the club are not going to change him. I have Manchester United fans on my social media saying you won’t call him out because ‘he’s your mate’. No I won’t. I won’t call out any manager and ask for them to be sacked.
