ONE: Stamp admits ‘I didn’t know rules either’ for Meksen bout

“To be honest, I didn’t know either about the rules,” Stamp told the Post, laughing, at last weekend’s ONE Fight Night 7 event in Bangkok.

“But I think it’s fair because it’s MMA and Muay Thai, so it’s not really easy to give out the points fairly.

“I think it would have been an exciting fight, and I was kind of disappointed I let the fans down. I was quite disappointed the fight didn’t happen because my fans came, my friends came my family came, I was a little bit upset.”

The pair were originally also set to battle over the interim atomweight kickboxing title at ONE Fight Night 7 last weekend, but Stamp refused after January’s drama.

“It was a very big bout with a lot of fans expecting us to fight, so the cancellation made a lot of fans disappointed,” she said.

“I don’t think I would want to fight with her any more because it will reflect badly on me name, and I don’t think she respected the competition.”

ONE officials quickly reshuffled the January 14 card to keep Stamp on it, matching her up with Supergirl Jaroonsak in a strawweight kickboxing bout – which ultimately stole the show at the Impact Arena.

Stamp took a split decision and earned a US$50,000 performance bonus, with Supergirl also belatedly getting a bonus after ONE chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong admitted he made a “mistake” not awarding her it immediately.

“Yes, I said congratulations, I was very happy for her she got the bonus,” Stamp added. “We were in different weight classes and shouldn’t have been in the fight together.”

Despite no longer facing Meksen for a title, Stamp was still at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium on Saturday morning for a meet and greet with fans before the main card got under way, a line of hundreds snaking around the outside the arena.

“I was very excited and didn’t think there would be so many fans lining up to meet me,” she said.

The 25-year-old’s growing popularity with fans and star status in the promotion has been reflected by her being booked for ONE’s on-ground US debut in Colorado on May 5.

The No 1-ranked atomweight MMA contender will look to defend her spot against the 28-year-old American Alyse Anderson (6-2) at 1stBank Center.

“I’m excited because I will be fighting in the USA for the first time, and it’s the first event for ONE Championship there too,” Stamp said.

“It’s a pretty big fight, so I’ll try everything to beat her.”

Looking further down the line, another possible future opponent for Stamp could be decided by another big fight taking place in Singapore next month.

No 2-ranked Ham Seo-hee will face off with Itsuki Hirata at ONE Fight Night 8, after their original bout in November fell apart at the eleventh hour in dramatic circumstances.

“I don’t know,” Stamp said, when asked for a prediction. “It’s 50-50. I like both Itsuki and Ham. They are both really great fighters so I don’t know.”
