OnePlus promises four years of Android updates for some of its phones – Times of India

One area — and there are quite a few — where Apple remains ahead of its Android rivals is the promise of providing software updates to older phones. In the last few years, however, Samsung has started to catch up and promise four years of updates. Even Google doesn’t promise more than three years. However, OnePlus has now confirmed that it will give four years of OS updates to some of its phones.

OnePlus steps up its OS game

According to a report by Digital Trends, the head of software products at OnePlus confirmed this development at a OnePlus community event. As per the report, Gary Chen, head of software products at OnePlus, said, “We do everything we can to enhance user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that possibility. This new update policy will give users access to the latest security and functional features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone.”
It is, however, not yet clear which are the smartphones that will get four years of updates. Chances are that the premium OnePlus phones will certainly be a part of it but not all smartphones in the Nord series will get four updates.
It is a smart move from OnePlus and one that is clearly aimed at encouraging people to keep their phones for a longer period. Samsung has been doing it for the last one year or so. The likes of Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Realms don’t claim to offer more than three years of OS upgrades. Google also for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro promised OS updates till 2025 — which means just three years. Compare this with Apple then older iPhones can easily expect five years of updates, sometimes the number goes up to six years as well.
OnePlus, meanwhile, also confirmed that a major update to OxygenOS will arrive in 2023 in the form of OxygenOS 13.1
