OnePlus Tag could take on Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag soon | 91mobiles.com
Tracking devices that you can use to track your personal belongings such as keys, wallets, and bags aren’t a new thing. For instance, Tile, a US-based company, has been offering item trackers for quite a long time. Recently, however, big tech companies have jumped on the tracking device bandwagon. Samsung launched the Galaxy SmartTag in January last year. Apple’s much-rumored AirTag also broke cover in March this year. Now, it looks like OnePlus is also planning to launch an item tracker, dubbed, the OnePlus Tag. The company has recently trademarked the OnePlus Tag moniker, suggesting that such a device could exist.
OnePlus Tag might be in the works
First spotted by DroidMaze and Neowin, OnePlus has filed for a trademark for the OnePlus Tag moniker on May 18th, 2021 (through Beijing Intangible Technology). Going by the name, OnePlus Tag seems to be an item tracker that you can use to track your personal belongings such as keys, wallets, and bags. OnePlus Tag could be similar to the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and Apple AirTag. Unfortunately, the trademark listing does not reveal the OnePlus Tag specifications or launch date. Moreover, we don’t even know if the company is actually working on the OnePlus Tag or if the brand has just trademarked the name for future purposes.
Tracking devices and flagship smartphones from Samsung and Apple feature Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which goes hand in hand for accurate tracking. However, no device from OnePlus has support for UWB so far. If OnePlus wants to offer an object tracker as accurate as those from Samsung and Apple, it will have to bring UWB to its smartphones as well. And if that is to happen, we might have to wait for quite a long time as the next flagship from OnePlus is still many months away. If OnePlus does launch an item tracker without UWB support, we are not sure how useful will it be and if people would actually want to buy it.
