Openai: Here’s what Italy wants OpenAI to do to lift ban on ChatGPT – Times of India

Italy became one of the first countries to ban ChatGPT last month as OpenAI wasn’t allegedly following the privacy laws of the country. It is something that Sam Altman, OpenAI, confirmed and said that the chatbot won’t be available. “We of course defer to the Italian government and have ceased offering ChatGPT in Italy (though we think we are following all privacy laws),” Altman said in a tweet. Now, Italy has offered an olive branch to OpenAI and laid out certain terms and conditions if the company wants the ban to be revoked.
In a press release, the Italian regulator Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data (GPPD) has said that the company will have to take certain measures. These measures include being more transparent and informing users about how their data is being. “The information must be easily accessible and placed in a position that allows it to be read before proceeding with any registration to the service,” GPPD said. The information must be presented before the completion of the registration and users must be required to declare that they are of legal age, added GPPD.
Also, OpenAI should have a campaign informing users how their data is being used. “OpenAI will finally have to promote an information campaign on radio, television, newspapers and the web to inform people about the use of their personal data for the purpose of training algorithms,” GPPD demanded.
How much time OpenAI has to adhere to the guidelines?
OpenAI will have until April 30 to comply with the requirements imposed by Italy. The GPPD said that it is doing this “for the protection of personal data regarding information, rights of data subjects, users and non-users, legal basis of the processing of personal data for the training of algorithms with user data.”
