Optimised Battery Charging: What does it mean, how it works on iPhone, and more – Times of India
What is Optimised Battery Charging?
As per one of Apple’s support documents, Optimised Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and “improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged.”
How does Optimised Battery Charging work?
When the feature is enabled, the iPhone will automatically delay charging past 80% in certain situations. The iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn a user’s daily charging routine. By doing that, Optimised Battery Charging activates only when the iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. “The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged,” explains Apple. When Optimised Battery Charging is active, users will see a notification on the Lock Screen which tells them when the iPhone is fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.
Also, keep in mind that Optimised Battery Charging needs at least 14 days to learn a user’s charging habits, so it won’t engage before then. Also, an iPhone needs to experience at least 9 charges of 5 hours or more in a given location for Optimised Battery Charging to engage.
Why is location important for Optimised Battery Charging?
Apple says that Optimised charging is designed to engage only in locations where a user spends the most time, such as your home and place of work. “The feature doesn’t engage when your usage habits are more variable, such as when you travel,” says Apple. So some location settings must be enabled for the Optimised Battery Charging feature to activate and work properly.
How to activate Optimised Battery Charging?
Optimised Battery Charging is on by default when you set up your iPhone or after updating to iOS 13 or later. To turn off the feature, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and turn off Optimised Battery Charging.
