A blistering partnership between Dean Foxcroft and Ben Lockrose has carried Otago Volts to a four-wicket men’s Super Smash T20 win over Central Districts in Dunedin.
It completed a double for the home side on Sunday, with the Otago women earlier beating the hapless Central Districts by six wickets.
Foxcroft and Lockrose came together with their team in trouble but responded with an unbeaten 81 off 39 balls to steer the men to victory with three balls to spare.
Central scored an imposing 187 for five, built around a rapid 79 not out off 45 balls from captain Tom Bruce, supported by 53 off 33 from Will Young.
Spinner Jayden Lennox decimated Otago’s middler order, taking 4-28, reducing the chase 109-6 before Foxcroft and Lockrose erupted over the closing stages, hitting seven fours and six sixes between them.
The Otago women could thank Sophie Oldershaw’s 3-24 with her legspinners as Central were dismissed for 108 from the final ball.
A slow start meant the finish was a close one, with Otago crawling to 111-4 off 19.2 overs, with wicketkeeper Polly Inglis scoring an unbeaten 30 off 35.
It was a ninth straight loss for the winless Central Districts women.
