Overwatch is stopping sales of loot boxes, here’s why – Times of India

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch sequel is set to launch on October 4. The developers of the game have updated their blog post to confirm that the original Overwatch game will stop selling the loot boxes from August 30. Also, any unused loot boxes will automatically open in the game just before the launch of Overwatch 2.
Players will be allowed to earn loot boxes after the Anniversary Remix Vol 3 event has ended (which will be for a short period), but no new boxes will be available for purchase. According to a report by WindowsCentral, original Overwatch players can choose to buy the Watchpoint Pack to secure a few extra loot boxes, which will also include the first battle pass of Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 availability
Overwatch 2 is currently scheduled to launch as a free-to-play game which will be available across multiple platforms including — Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
Why Blizzard is stopping the sale of loot boxes in Overwatch
As per the report, this move is expected to help in the transition between Overwatch and Overwatch 2 as the latter is set to replace the original one. As Overwatch 2 won’t be using loot boxes, the upcoming game will get the recently popular trend of including Battle Pass.

Apart from the Battle Pass, the game will also offer premium currency and direct purchases. Moreover, the multiplayer part of Overwatch 2 will be launched initially and the story experience or single-player experience will be unveiled at a later date(which doesn’t have a specific release date yet).
