Patrick Mahomes is eating his words on Justin Herbert after Chiefs loss to Chargers

As the saying goes: Keep your words soft and sweet in case you have to eat them later.

To that end, Patrick Mahomes has himself a nice, hearty breakfast on Monday morning.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had an all-time great rookie season but that apparently wasn’t enough for AFC West don Mahomes, who delivered some light trash talk early in the offseason at a charity golf event; A fan prodded, “Watch out for Herbert,” To which Mahomes had a fairly innocuous reply.

“I’ll see it when I believe it,” Mahomes said. (He mixed up some words there.)

Well, on Sunday, the Chiefs and Mahomes both saw it, now they have to believe it, after the Chargers secured a 30-24 win over Kansas City in Arrowhead Stadium, knocking the Chiefs to the AFC West cellar.

Mahomes was asked about the dig after the loss on Sunday, and he had a short answer.

“The term, ‘I’ll see it when I believe it,’ — What did you see from Justin Herbert today?,” a reporter asked following the Week 3 matchup.

“I guess I believe it. That’s all you can say,” Mahomes said.

Herbert had a scot-free, four-touchdown day vs. the division rivals on Sunday, and he’s picked up where he’s left off following his dazzling rookie season with Los Angeles. So far, Herbert has completed 69.6 percent of his passes with six touchdowns, three interceptions and 956 yards through three games.

The two young AFC West franchise passers have a developing rivalry that should see the division at stake for years to come. So far, the Herbert-era Chargers have the 2-1 upper hand on the Mahomes Chiefs.

Expect the trash talk to only get more bitter as the season wears on.
