Peacock Is Raising Its Prices in a Bid to Offset Billions in Losses
Peacock is raising its prices across the board as NBC seeks to offset losses that are expected to peak at $3 billion in 2023, Variety reports.
Starting next month, Peacock Premium will rise from $4.99 to $5.99 per month, with the commercial-free Peacock Premium Plus rising from $9.99 to $11.99 per month. Subscribers will be notified at 9pm PT, with the changes being effective on August 17.
Peacock’s price increase follows the removal of the service’s free tier for new users. NBC has also stopped bundling Peacock Premium with Comcast Xfinity.
Peacock joins Paramount+ and Max, both of which have raised their prices in 2023. Disney+ and Hulu previously raised their prices back in 2022. Netflix has similarly cracked down on account sharing after a major dropoff in new subscriptions.
Peacock has struggled to find its footing since launching back in 2020. It is known for being the main home of Premier League soccer in the U.S., though the decision to split games between Peacock and cable has sparked confusion among some fans. It also features popular shows including The Office and Poker Face.
Comcast says that Peacock has grown to 22 million subscribers, which it claims is a 60 percent year-over-year growth. Looking ahead, Peacock will be adding The Continental, which is the first John Wick spinoff without John Wick.
“While it’s not the biggest or the best, in two years, Peacock has become a more than respectable streaming option,” we wrote in our 2022 review of Peacock.
Read on for our explanation of why streaming is broken, and why the ongoing strikes rocking Hollywood can save it.
